Am writing: an Academic Podcasting Workbook

After a decade of producing scholarly audio outputs, I’ve decided to pour all I’ve learned and been teaching others into a book. Working title: The Academic Podcasting Workbook. Basically a practical guide designed to help academics, researchers, and anyone interested in creating research-based audio content navigate the process of scholarly podcasting.

The workbook will cover everything from the basics of podcast creation to advanced techniques for peer-reviewed audio outputs. It’s not just about theory – this guide is packed with hands-on exercises, worksheets, and real-world examples to help you bring your academic ideas to life in audio form.

Key sections of the book will include:

  • Exploring the landscape of academic podcasting
  • Setting up your podcast, from equipment to hosting platforms
  • Crafting compelling content for academic audiences
  • Interview techniques for scholars
  • Editing and post-production basics
  • The ins and outs of peer-reviewed podcasting
  • Promoting your podcast in academic circles

I’m only in “down draft” mode but already know it will focus on the unique challenges and opportunities of academic podcasting. We’ll delve into topics like maintaining academic rigour in an audio format, using podcasts as a research methodology, and navigating the evolving landscape of peer-reviewed audio content.

Yes, I’m writing this book as a way of avoiding teaching the same concepts again and again but I’ve also witnessed firsthand the power of audio to make complex ideas accessible and to foster engaging discussions across disciplines and seen many academics struggle with the technical and creative aspects of podcast production. This workbook aims to bridge that gap, providing a comprehensive resource that doesn’t exist elsewhere. Hopefully it will empower more scholars to embrace podcasting, leading to a richer, more diverse landscape of academic audio content. Huzzah!

The Academic Podcasting Workbook is set to be released in 2025, but the journey of creating it is already proving to be an exciting exploration of the intersection between academia and audio storytelling. Stay tuned for updates, and get ready to amplify your research through the power of podcasting!
