Live footy sure is a laf

Like many sports, our Australian football games are being played in empty stadiums. But watching live on a screen you can still hear the roar of a crowd, the oohs, oofs, and ahs of people reacting to the game. Yep, being a sports crowd sounds DJ is now a thing.

I’m amazed by whoever is composing the audio for the live footy games right now. It’s pretty seamless. Basically a DJ but instead of music you have crowd sounds.

What is the process here? It must have been put together quickly and with someone working from home I assume and using audio from previous games. Do they use any stock audio? How do they cut around any specifics from past games such as “C’mon Ablett!” Or similar? Intriguing.

It’s kind of a flashback to the origin of Laf tracks, we all know canned laughter from American sitcoms but originally this was also done live and then mixed

It shows how much the crowd matters to sports fandom. Watching athletes compete is only part of the appeal, but that tribalism of cheering together, or shouting together, the unified ‘yeaaaah’ or ‘ooohs’ are also essential.
